The BET Awards Recap

For a night that was supposed to be a tribute to the late Michael Jackson [click to read], the 2009 BET Awards [click to read] left more to be desired from the over three and a half hour long show. The 2009 BET Awards opened with a lackluster performance of Jackson 5 classics by R&B group New Edition. Surprisingly, the group was joined by New Edition member Bobby Brown who is rarely seen with his fellow group members.Before the day of the awards show the official BET Twitter page informed viewers that Chris Brown would open for the show, but the singer did not appear at the awards show. Following New Edition’s performance Jamie Foxx, the host for the evening, made his entrance clad entirely in Michael Jackson attire and broke into a short dance performance to “Beat It”. To make room for the Michael Jackson tributes BET chose not to announce the nominee’s. Instead only the category and winner were revealed leaving viewers to ponder over who was even nominated. The audience was then treated to performances by R&B sensations Keri Hilson and Beyonce who had very differing performances. Keri’s performance was an energetic rendition of her single “Knock You Down” while Beyonce’s performance included an operatic recital of “Ave Maria”.A handful of awards were handed out during the 2009 BET Awards and they included Ne-Yo for Best Male R&B Artist, Beyonce for Best Female R&B Artist, Lil Wayne for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, and Keri Hilson for Best New Artist just to name a few. Similar to Alicia Keys’ tribute to R&B girl groups of the 90’s at last years BET awards, Ne-Yo took the opportunity to highlight some of R&B’s most well known male artists including Keith Sweat, Guy, and Bell Biv DeVoe.Ne-Yo turned out to be the star of the night with his heartfelt musical tributes to Michael Jackson including a stirring rendition of “The Lady In My Life”. The Lifetime Achievement tribute to The O’Jays seemed to liven up the crowd although the legendary groups tribute was preceded by a seemingly never-ending introduction by former Soul Train host Don Cornelius. Maxwell returned to the stage after a hiatus of almost eight years to perform his new single “Pretty Wings”. Jay-Z performed “D.O.A.” alongside a live band [click to watch] and the music video for “D.O.A.” [click to watch] premiered shortly after the awards. Earlier in the evening rapper Soulja Boy performed his hit song “Turn My Swag On” complete with oversized bed and an array of flashing lights. One of the more bizarre performances of the night included Lil Wayne, Drake, and other Young Money artists performing “Every Girl” while Lil Wayne’s daughter and her friends danced on stage [click to watch]. Drake’s sit-down performance left some fans wondering if Drake was trying to channel Degrassi’s Jimmy Brooks for his first ever BET awards show performance. It was later revealed that Drake had in fact torn his ACL while playing basketball earlier that week. The most moving moment of the show was an appearance by a grief-stricken, but composed Janet Jackson. Janet spoke on her older brother Michael Jackson and told fans “To you, Michael is an icon. To us, Michael is family. He will forever live in all of our hearts. On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for all of your love, thank you for all of your support. We miss him so much. Thank you so much." The show was then closed by a somber performance of the Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There” by Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo.

Legendary pop singer Michael Jackson was taken to the hospital, where died today, after suffering a heart attack in Los Angeles, California today (June 25).

Paramedics administered CPR on the 50-year-singer, as he was rushed to a local Los Angeles hospital via an ambulance.

Calls from Jackson’s house were placed to 911 around 12:20 PM PT from his Holmby Hills home in Los Angeles, according to TMZ.com.

In December of 2008, Jackson’s brother Jermaine made startling claims that the King of Pop was suffering from a rare lung disease and other potentially fatal illnesses, although neither health issues were confirmed.

Jackson was currently in the middle of planning a 50-date concert series at London’s O2 Arena, as well as working on a come back album. He will be missed sorely and truly

Jay-Z's new song is definitely getting the people talking, but you have to wonder where it came from. Think about it, it SEEMS like the Autotune phase as pretty much run its course, but not for everybody. I heard some people in the South aren't too pleased with it, but he's pretty clear that he's not dissing T-Pain. The real target according to rumor is RON BROWZ. Well, if you know, Ron Browz produced "Ether" for Nas and still seems to want to live off that fame, by calling himself "Etherboy." Not to mention that he uses the Autotune in a way that's not exactly original. I heard that is Jay's real target in "destroying" the trend. Not, sure but that talk sure has hit a fever pitch.

Max B found Guilty thats not Wavy
Rapper Max B has swiftly responded to a murder conviction with an appeal of all charges, his lawyer said. In a statement issued to AllHipHop.com, Gerald Saluti said, “Max B would like to first thank all his family, friends and fans that have supported him throughout this trial. Please don't give up on him at this point. Although the jury has spoken and Max has been convicted of felony murder, kidnapping, robbery and conspiracy a swift and successful appeal shall follow.” Saluti also expressed concern that the facts in the case were not properly addressed. “It is inconceivable that a jury could convict Max under the facts presented by the State. Even Gina Conway the State's own witness testified that Max knew nothing of a robbery,” he stated. “Ms. Conway, a jilted lover and proven liar, said so at the trial itself. Max said after the verdict was read that he is confident that justice will eventually be served and he will be free.” Despite the conviction, more music will soon follow. “Max intends to continue putting out music for his fans while the appeal process grinds along. Although shocked by the verdict, Max remained grateful," Saluti concluded. Prosecutors accused Max B., born Charly Wingate, of coordinating the robbery of two men at a Holiday Inn located in Northern New Jersey. He faces 25 years in jail.

Well, well all know that Universal and Atlantic Records have been in a bidding war for the artist known as Drake. Well, I have news for you…or a rumor rather. From what I understand Drake is now listed as getting down with Atlantic Records. I can’t reveal how I obtained this information, because it will compromise my source. Nevertheless, I am here to let you fiends know that Drake is reportedly looking for beats for his upcoming album and he is already working with artists like Jay-Z. I also heard that he is at the top of the list on their releases. I am not sure how exactly…perhaps it’s alphabetical order or something. Drake was listed as a release on ATF Records/Atlantic Records, but had no planned release. Also in Rumor Land, Drake officially started on his album as of June 1. By the way, ATF stands for All Things Fresh. There are a couple other ATF Records out there.

A DipSet Reunion: OH SNAP! Its going down! Well, the rumors are back. I am hearing, once again, that Dipset is going to re-unite at the Summer Jam Event. I just got word from somebody that knows somebody that knows somebody. They are saying that this reunion is chiefly centered around Jim Jones and Cam'ron, but will likely include Juelz and others.
